Relief from the harsh desert sun led to architectural stardom.
The first and only World's Fair that I attended as a kid was in New York City 1964 where the popularity of screen block peaked. Coincidentally, today the Desert Sun published a terrific article citing the history of this architectural feature along with the key role that it played, and continues to play, in Palm Springs construction old and new.
